How the 38-Hour Driver’s Ed Class Works (Ages 14 Years 9 Months to 17)
This course is required by Louisiana law for anyone 17 years old or younger seeking their first driver's license.
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Register for the Class
Sign up for the 38-Hour Driver’s Education Course at NOLA Driving Institute.
💰 Cost: $600 total — includes both classroom and driving portions.
Step 2: Get a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP)
Visit the DMV with a parent or legal guardian to obtain your TIP before class begins.
Step 3: Complete the 30-Hour Classroom Instruction
Classes are held over 4 days. At the end of the course, you will take the written knowledge test.
Step 4: Complete 8 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel Driving
After the class, you will be scheduled for two 4-hour driving sessions with a certified instructor.
Step 5: Receive Your Completion Documents
Once classroom and driving sessions are completed, you will receive documentation to take to the DMV to get your learner’s permit.
Step 6: Schedule Your Road Skills Test (Optional)
When ready to move from a permit to a full license, schedule your Road Skills Test:

Step 7: Get Your Driver’s License
After passing the Road Skills Test, head down the hall to ABC Title (in the same building) to get your driver’s license issued.

If age 17, you may go straight from a TIP to a license.

If 16, you must hold your learner’s permit for at least 180 days before testing for a license.

A parent or guardian must accompany anyone 17 or younger to all DMV appointments and testing
How the 14-Hour Driver’s Ed Class Works (Ages 18 & Older)
This course is required by Louisiana law for first-time adult drivers (ages 18 and older) who are applying for a driver’s license.
Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Register for the Class
Sign up for the 14-Hour Adult Driver’s Education Course at NOLA Driving Institute.
💰 Cost: $500 — includes both classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction.
Step 2: Get a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP)
Visit the DMV to obtain your TIP before attending class.
👉 A TIP is required to take the class and begin driving instruction.
Step 3: Complete the 6-Hour Classroom Session
Attend a one-day, 6-hour class.
At the end of class, you’ll take the written knowledge test.
Step 4: Complete 8 Hours of Behind-the-Wheel Driving
After passing the written test, you’ll be scheduled for 8 hours of driving.
This is usually split over 2 to 3 sessions based on your availability.
Step 5: Receive Your Completion Documents
Once you’ve finished both the classroom and driving portions, you’ll receive the documentation needed to obtain your learner’s permit.
Step 6: Schedule a Road Skills Test (Optional)
When you feel ready to get your license, schedule your Road Skills Test with us.
Step 7: Get Your Driver’s License
After passing the Road Skills Test, you can go down the hall to ABC Title (located in our building) to have your driver’s license issued.
