How Do I Teach My Child to Drive?

What a scary adventure. You child is old enough to get a learners permit and the time has come. How do you accomplish this and make it home in one piece? While the thought is terrifying there are some things you can do to teach child drive you may not know. We have taught thousands of kids to drive and here I am. This blog should be title “HOW TO SURVIVE MY TEENAGE DRIVER “.

Well here are some tips to help you in your journey.

1. BE PATIENT

Patience is a virtue. The worst thing you can do while teaching your teenage driver to drive is loose your cool. Never raise your voice. When training a student raising your voice tends to make the student regress.

2. PICK THE APPROPRIATE TIME

A quite Sunday morning drive with your teenage driver is the best place to start. However start in a parking lot. Then progress to a neighborhood street, then a quite back road. It should be noted that it is illegal to teach a student to drive on a public highway without a learners permit. These tips are for after your teen driver has attended NOLA Driving Institute‘s Driver’s Education Course. However it is legal on private property like your yard or a parking lot.

3. LIMIT THE TRAINING TIME

A good block of time for drivers training should be limited to 30-60 minutes. When first starting the driver can become frustrated. They are an inexperienced driver and you are an inexperienced driving instructor. Know you and your teen drivers limitation.

4. STOP AND EXPLAIN

When a teenage driver makes a mistake stop and explain. You will be tempted to tell them what they have done wrong, but don’t. Explain how the maneuver should have been done and carry on.

5. POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

Praise them at every turn. Clap and completely over do it. The more praise you shower them with the better. Remember this is all new to them. You can’t just push baby bird out the nest and expect them to fly.

6. PICK A QUALITY DRIVING SCHOOL

I can’t overstate what an important decision this is. Research each school and find out how they operate. Some people have a passion for teaching and some people have a passion for your money.
